Digital night vision devices use a different technology, which makes the devices much cheaper.

Digital night vision devices use a different technology to that of the first- or second-generation night vision devices. They come without glass tubes or photocathodes, which makes the devices much cheaper.

Digital night vision devices convert the light captured by an integrated image sensor using associated electronics. The image is then broadcast via the micro-display. Thanks to this technology, digital devices can also be used in twilight without permanently damaging a tube.

Some models also have infrared illumination so that they can be used in total darkness.
